Paluan, Occidental Mindoro, Jan. 24, 1998 - The Calawagan River in Paluan was adjudged the cleanest river in the country for the second straight year. The award was handed to Mayor Abelardo Pangilinan by President Ramos at the Luneta Grandstand a few weeks ago.
Calawagan River met the two major criteria for the award: physical condition and community support system. First Lady Ming Ramos is the project's honorary chairman.
The river is in Sitio Calawagan, 20 minutes away from the Paluan town hall. At the entrance of Alipauy is a Mangyan community composed of 50 families, who were moved from their original settlement upstream to deter pollution and destruction of the river source.
The Mangyans are resettled in a one-hectare lot appropriated by the town, complete with a one- room, multi-grade school. Potable water is piped in from the river.
To help defray the expenses of caretakers, including the salary of a Mangyan forest ranger, the Calawagan Resort was set up for picnics and public celebrations. The entrance fee of P15 per person goes into a kitty for all the expenses, including maintenance and salaries.
